[EP.6] How to Paint a Scottish Castle in Line and Wash

Hi I'm Emma Andrews, a fun content creator and a diligent self-taught illustrator 😃

I'm big on crime tv shows. If you ask me that I'm okay with violent scenes, well.. no I am not but I get intrigued by the process of getting killers, I sincerely appologize for causing any distress if I do so, and finding out what drove him/her/them commit a crime. That's it all. Anyway I recently finished a crime tv series that was set in Scottland and there were some nice sceneries. That sort of got me having a go at this painting and it was easier than I expected it'd be.

In this video I am to share the whole process of painting a castle and my materials. In addition, I'm demonstrating how to create a rocky texture using a piece of tealight. The title says it's done in line and wash but actually I did a pencil work first, painted and then finished it off by adding final lines with my fountain pen loaded with water soluble ink so it's not defined as line and wash nor wash and line. Shall we get started?

I've recently upgraded my palette 😃😃 I nearly bought every colour that I came across on my art supplies' website but I ened up getting only a few that I thought I'd need the most so my current palette is made up of some student grade paints as well as professionals ones from two different brands.

▪ My paper

The primary paper used in my demonstation is L'AQUARELLE CANSON HERITAGE 140 pound rough, a 100% cotton paper, 23cm × 31cm - 9.1" × 12.2". It seems like it doesn't buckle as much as the other one that I used for a practice exercise. That's Mont Marte A3 watercolour pads. Speaking of which, I make sure to tape it down firmly on the surface of my desk every time I use it as I've learned some lessons from my own experiences.

No. 12 Round (Escoda Travel brush)

3/4" Flat, No.12, 6 Round & 6 from my Princeton Neptune professional brush set, 4750 Series

▪ A piece of tealight

▪ A fountain Pen with water soluble ink (Sailor Fude De Mannen with a nib at 55°)

▪ A white pastel pencil (Conté à Paris)

▪ A craft knife/ craft scalpel

I'm someone that took up watercolour quite recently, late July of this year ss I resigned from my position with the previous job. With that being said, I'm fairly new to the medium and have been through some trials and errors from my watercolour experiences so I just wanted to share the process and techniques with others in the same stage. However I welcome all levels, all hands, all genders, all souls 🤗
