Hang Seng Index rises as Kuaishou jumps, HSBC slips

12th May 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong equities opened higher on 12th May, with the Hang Seng Index gaining 90 points at the start of trading and later extending its advance to 99 points, or 0.37 per cent, to 26,506. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index climbed 42 points, or 0.48 per cent, to 8,926, while the Hang Seng Tech Index added 30 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 5,137. Market turnover stood at HK$28 billion.
Major technology shares were broadly steady. Tencent rose 0.3 per cent, Alibaba gained 0.5 per cent and Meituan edged up 0.2 per cent. Xiaomi advanced 0.8 per cent and JD.com increased 0.5 per cent. Kuaishou outperformed its peers, surging 7.8 per cent amid reports it may spin off its Kling AI business for a separate listing, making it the strongest-performing blue-chip stock of the session.
Financial stocks delivered mixed results. HSBC slipped 0.3 per cent after announcing plans to issue perpetual subordinated contingent convertible securities. AIA Group added 0.3 per cent, Ping An Insurance rose 0.7 per cent and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing edged up 0.2 per cent.
